Reading the flow canvas

What the marks mean

  • Solid links are documented in a cited source. Every link runs through its own grey connection card, labelled with the ids of the two boxes it joins. The light at the left of its band carries the card’s id: green when it pipes data on, yellow when its source offers data but none is piped, red when the source offers nothing. Point at a card to read its evidence and basis.

  • Dashed links are inferred and not tested on this page.

  • Dotted links have not been reviewed yet. A new connection starts this way.

  • A green light on a box means it holds figures from a cited source.

  • A red light marks a box with figures that is not connected yet, in the row below the flow. How they connect to the flow has not been worked out.

  • A yellow light on a box, and the violet links and labels that lead into it, mark what this page does not know.

Moving around

  • Drag the background to pan.
  • Drag a box by its title to move it.
  • Select the page title and drag the dot on either side to change its width.

Connecting boxes

  • Point near a box to show the dots on its sides, then drag from the dot on the right and drop it on another box. A new connection, not reviewed yet, appears with its own connection card.
  • Each connection card lists every data source its source card offers: a box offers its dataset; a computation offers its result plus the raw data it was given. The Pipe switch beside each decides whether it reaches the target.
  • The </> button switches a card between that list and the same list as JSON. Everything added on the canvas lasts until the page is reloaded; the JSON tab on the right holds it all.
  • Hold Ctrl or ⌘ and scroll to zoom, or use the − + buttons in the controls panel. Fit shows everything again.
  • Shapes, in the controls panel, adds a box, a computation or a text card in the middle of the screen. Double-click any title to rename it.
  • A computation runs an algorithm on the data piped into it and shows the result. Its button opens the algorithm menu. Its light is red with no input, yellow with no algorithm, green with a result.
  • The search box in the controls panel finds cards by id, title, algorithm or dataset. Enter steps through the matches.
  • Select a box or a connection card and press Delete to remove it. Removing a box removes its connections too.
  • Every link is listed, with its evidence, in the links table in the Sources view.
